As of 2023, the U. S. Department of Energy has increased the minimum energy efficiency requirements for air conditioners in Florida. Single-pack air conditioners must have a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 14 or higher in order to meet these standards.
To ensure that HVAC equipment meets these requirements, plan review, product evaluation, testing and certification by third parties is necessary. The Florida Construction Commission is taking the necessary steps to update the current Florida Building Code (Energy Conservation) to meet the new standards set by the U. Department of Energy. They will also notify energy compliance software providers so that their software can be updated accordingly.
In addition, all HVAC manufacturers must comply with new test procedures to measure and develop the efficiency indices of HVAC units. If you have any questions about whether the HVAC equipment you are currently installing or plan to install in the future will meet the requirements of the U. Department of Energy, contact your dealer, the equipment manufacturer, or the U. Department of Energy.
